Dentures and Their Uses

Dentures are removable replacements for teeth that are made of an acrylic plastic, and occasionally porcelain and materials made of metal. They are designed to appear as similar to natural teeth as possible. When all teeth are missing, a set of complete dentures is made for the wearer. If some teeth remain in the mouth, then partial dentures will likely be recommended by one of our hmo dentist Tustin or other dentist.

Complete dentures are conventional or immediate. With conventional dentures, any remaining teeth must be removed and then the patient must wait several months to allow the tissues to heal. Afterwards, complete dentures will be inserted. Immediate dentures can be inserted the same day all tooth extractions occur.

However, as the tissues heal, this can cause changes to the mouth and regular appointments to adjust the fit of the dentures are required.

What are Dentures?

For anyone suffering from the loss of teeth, whether a full mouth or only a few, dentures make sense. This removable appliance is close in appearance to natural teeth. Most dentures are made of an acrylic plastic, though sometimes other materials are used. A partial denture will look like a pink gum with teeth attached to it.

Not Just for the Elderly

People who suffer from tooth decay, periodontal disease or an injury may benefit from partial or complete dentures. Tooth loss is often a source of social embarrassment and self consciousness. Complete or partial dentures can improve appearance and health. To understand all available options, consult with one of our dental experts.

The Process of Inserting Dentures

Inserting dentures requires several appointments carried over a number of weeks. First, our dentist will determine the best dentures for the patient. Then it is necessary for measurements to be taken of the jaw, as well as impressions. The next step is to create models, wax forms or patterns made of plastic that match exactly the position and shape of each denture. After this, the patient is asked to “try-in,” which means wearing a preliminary denture cast to check the color, shape and fit. Finally, the dentures are inserted and any adjustments will take place in follow-up appointments.

Partial dentures or a dental bridge will be used when one or more teeth remain. Here, the partial dentures will fill in the gaps of missing teeth and prevent the remaining teeth from moving.
